LA County Steps Up With Emergency Grants for Families Hit Hard by Immigration Enforcement
When federal immigration operations swept through Los Angeles County in mid-2025, thousands of families suddenly found themselves unable to pay rent, mortgages, or utility bills.
Many households lost their primary breadwinners overnight, leaving them scrambling to keep a roof over their heads.
To address this growing crisis, LA County launched a housing relief program offering grants of up to $15,000 to affected families.
What the Program Covers
The Emergency Rental Relief Program helps residents cover essential housing costs, including:
- Overdue rent payments
- Missed mortgage payments
- Utility bills like electricity and water
- Other housing expenses tied to the financial hardship
Importantly, this money is a grant, not a loan—recipients don't have to pay anything back.
Who Qualifies
To be eligible, applicants must show that they experienced a sudden drop in income because of federal immigration enforcement. The program also extends to some families still struggling after the January 2025 wildfires.
Priority goes to households earning 80% or less of the area's median income, as well as small landlords who own four or fewer rental units. Notably, immigration status is not considered when reviewing applications.
The Bigger Picture
The economic toll of the enforcement operations has been significant. Between June and December 2025, LA County lost more than 11,700 jobs and nearly $1 billion in worker wages.
Overall, the region's economy took a hit of roughly $2.5 billion during that period. Over 4,100 people were detained in the county during the early weeks of the operations.
Program Status
The county initially set aside $30 million for the program when it launched in September 2025. By February 2026, funding had grown to over $37 million to meet ongoing demand.
Currently, the application windows have closed—the first round ended January 23, 2026, and the second closed March 11, 2026. However, applications submitted before those deadlines are still being processed.
For those who missed out, there's still hope. The program website offers an interest form that allows residents to sign up to be notified if more funding becomes available.
